Human rights in the city – a school competition
Schools were invited to take part in a creative competition to express their view of how fundamental rights are made a reality in Vienna, creatively thinking about the principles of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
The teams could submit a video clip, animation / cartoon or a photo or a painting under the Fundamental Rights Forum’s slogan ‘connect.reflect.act’. The competition encouraged students to discuss (’reflect’) jointly on how people of different backgrounds can live together (‘connect’) and how acting responsibly can benefit us all (’act’).
The winning teams will take part in the Fundamental Rights Forum 2016 and present their projects to Forum delegates and the media at the market place of ideas and a dedicated workshop.
The competition was a joint project between FRA, and the City of Vienna’s Office for Human Rights and its School Authority.

A fair city – is that possible?
Children of the Rötzergasse primary school (Year 2D) produced a cut out animation showing everyday stories based on specific human rights important to the children. As an introduction to the topic of human rights, the children discussed the basic conditions for a nice city to live in and who provides these. In working groups the children invented short stories linked to specific human rights: poor and rich, barrier-free city, freedom of religion and language rights. The children designed figures and scenes, worked on the story of the film, drafted texts and enthusiastically shot photos for the film.

With this project, Neue Mittelschule Kinzerplatz aimed to explain the basics of human rights to the youngsters in an understandable language. Two classes, including a class of students from different cultures and backgrounds, worked on the video for two days reflecting and focusing on human rights in the digital age. Once the students understood the foundations of human rights in broad terms, they discussed cyber mobbing, looked at videos, photos and research papers available online, and carried out role plays and various exercises. The end result was the talk show ‘Kipl Stars’ that tries to figure out how to fight cyber mobbing.

What connects us? (Was uns verbindet?)
‘What connects us?’ was a joint project from two schools and ‘Interface’, a Vienna-based initiative for promoting integration of children, youth and adults from migration backgrounds into our society. They reinvented the Forum’s slogan: connect.reflect.art! They explored many different ways in which the students are connected, despite their diverse backgrounds and countries of origin. Youths from Afghanistan, Austria, Belarus, Iraq, Congo, Poland, Romania, Russia, Somalia, Switzerland, Syria, and the US joined forces to create this project! They experimented with various creative techniques resulting in 4 unique pieces of art. This is how ‘connect.reflect.art’ was born.
